My Interview By Kirk Du Plessis from OptionAlpha

The OptionAlpha is a highly respected publication managed by highly dedicated and extremely knowledgeable editor, Kirk Du Plessis. I had the privilege to be interviewed by Kirk recently for his highly successful podcast. The Podcast was created and dedicated to options trader, stock market investor or trading wannabe.

In this interview, we covered the following topics:

  • Why over time my strategy has evolved into mainly non-directional strategies like iron condors and straddles.
  • Thoughts on position sizing and how many trades to have on at one time.
  • What I look for when buying options ahead of earnings.
  • My strategy for taking profits and managing risk associated with the trades.
  • A quick case study in a recent NKE earnings trade I made.
  • Why the trading timeline on the earnings strategy is generally short (5-10 days).

One topic that we dive into a little deeper is the strategy of buying straddles pre-earnings to profit from the rise in implied volatility.

  • Short Gamma vs. Long Gamma in Options Trading

Gamma is one of the primary Options Greeks, which measure an option's sensitivity to specific factors that could affect an option price. Despite traders hyping up several different Greeks and second-order Greeks like "Vanna" and "charm," there are only four primary Greeks that you need to be familiar with to understand options trading.

  • Predicting Probabilities in Options Trading: A Deep Dive into Advanced Methods

In options trading, the focus should not be on predicting the exact closing price of a ticker on a given date - a near-impossible task given the pseudo-random nature of markets. Instead, we aim to estimate probabilities: the likelihood of a ticker being above a specific value at a certain point in time. This perspective turns trading into a probabilistic exercise, leveraging historical data to make informed decisions.

This was great.  It is good to listen to while in your car just to reinforce the ideas that Kim is already teaching us.  Also Kirk has about 20 other episodes that I am finding extremely useful.   I listen to a lot of podcasts and Kirk's are better than most because there is not a lot of intro and chit chat.  He gets right to the point so there is a lot of useful information packed into a relatively short podcast.  Thanks to Kim for bringing this podcast to out attention.
