Option Trade Journal

Recommended Posts

I've new to the group. I've traded options for a few years (mostly directional - straight calls and puts) and have a simple trade journal. I was curious if someone has an excel spreadsheet that they would be willing to share - one that calculates risk, profit, ROI, etc based on inputs for these non-directional trade.

Thanks.

I use a simple spreadsheet to track these trades that calculates the profit and loss of each trade with and without commissions and I add notes about how the trade performed on each entry (it's similar in layout to Kim's performance page). I keep a copy of this in Dropbox so I can access it from work, home or iPad since I don't want to worry about syncing different documents depending on where I am physically when I want to update it. It's still a work in progress but you are welcome to use and or modify it if you wish. I'd be curious to see what some other users have come up with and would be willing to share with the SO community also. I'm not sure how you'd build in a risk profile to a tracking spreadsheet but if someone here can do it I'm all ears ( or eyes)!

Let me know if you'd like a copy and I can e-mail it to you. You can't post spreadsheets on SO (or at least I haven't been able to).

You can't post spreadsheets on SO (or at least I haven't been able to).

as you have dropbox you could copy it to the 'public' and share the link.

Ok here's a link to my spreadsheet that I track my trades on. I've left a little real data in there just so you can get a feel for it but obviously just clear it out for your own use. You can keep a running tally for the year or use a tab/month and keep a separate tabbed page to summarize your total trade performance, graphs etc. I haven't set up my reports in IB to be very user friendly yet but I intend to do that in the next weekend or two since it's sometimes hard to read across their reporting and add up things like commissions and leg pricing. It's much easier to input this as your trades are made (at least in IB it is). If you find it useful, great, if not I won't be offended if you don't use it :( If you are an Excel wiz and make changes others might find useful please post your changes so we can all benefit. Here ya go -->

Thanks for the spreadsheet xfan, I've been meaning to make one for quite a while... I've been lazy and just writing them down on my paper trade journal rather than making a spreadsheet. Much appreciated :D .

To keep myself somewhat organized with multiple trades, I created a spreadsheet with three tabs - watchlist, open trades, closed trades. I have a column for earnings announcement, which I review daily, as well as, Kim's alerts - which are great reminders. I move the trades from tab to tab as appropriate. This helps me. I hope it helps others.
