tjlocke99 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 A few days ago I considered closing a long position I had in a stock when in after hours the price shot up. This was around 5:30 PM ET. I did not do it because I did not have experience in after hours trading. I had no idea both how to do it in the IB software, as well as what type of fees there may be. Does anyone have any experience and lessons they could share on after hours trading? Thank you very much! Richard Quote
Guest listolyman Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) I assume that you had bought options for a stock that rose after hours. First of all you can only buy/sell stock after hours. Options are only traded from 9:30am-4:00pm(some indexes like spy and rut trade until 4:15) If you bought the stock then you have no options after hours. If you bought the options then you could short the stock after hours to lock in your profit. This puts a floor on your profit but also adds a ceiling to your profit. IB does not charge any additional costs for after hours trading. When placing a stock trade you select after hour hours. Guest listolyman Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Just check the after hours box when submitting your order and you will be queued up for trading. Quote
Kim Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 The only potential problem with AH trading is liquidity and wider spreads. Make sure you are using limit orders. Quote
